Top Climate Plan - 'Wilhelmsburger Straße 76 - 82'

The first objects to be refurbished in the framework of the „Top Climate Plan" campaign by their owners were two residential buildings dating from the year 1926 in Wilhelmsburger Straße auf der Veddel. This residential area arose under the famous former chief planning officer of Hamburg, Fritz Schumacher. Although the buildings with their characteristic clinker brick street facade have been placed under architectural conservation, they almost meet new building standard after completion of the refurbishing measures. As the street façade could not be insulated, all other parts of the buildings were brought up to an excellent standard to counteract this. In the courtyard area, the plastered facade was fitted with 18 cm of external insulation and with triple glazed passive house standard windows. The roof was fitted with an insulation layer 30 centimetres thick and the cellar ceiling is now cladded with good quality insulation material, 12 cm thick in places where this was possible, after taking the required headroom into consideration. Due to the constraints imposed on historical buildings, the windows in the street facade were fitted with double glazing. A solar thermal system for hot water preparation and heating support now supplements the renewed heating system. In this way the refurbishing measures make a contribution to the discussion about „Red Hamburg“ and the compatibility of conservation and climate protection in brick facades. The residential buildings in Wilhelmsburger Straße are exemplary objects of the Interreg IV B „Build with CaRe“ projects in which the IBA Hamburg together with other partners is committed to reducing the energy requirements in the building sector. As an associated partner, the IBA Hamburg provides support by supplying the data of these objects in the Interreg IV B Project „Co2ol Bricks“. Questions concerning the refurbishment of existing buildings, whilst adhering to the preservation of historical buildings and the cityscape, can be asked in the framework of the project.
