LABORatory for Art and Urban Development

This platform was established from 2007 to 2012 to enable the creative community, the civic population, urban developers and scientists to communicate. As a group, they discussed the (in)compatibility of art and urban development in unusual settings using unusual methods.

Dialogue between the cultural community and urban developers is not always low-controversy, yet within the context of major urban projects it is a vital component in seriously debating a topic that is frequently instrumentalised for partisan purposes. The IBA LABORatory for Art and Urban Development has enabled IBA Hamburg not only to provide a broad-based discussion platform for this debate but also an environment in which to test experimental forms of communication since 2007.

The debut IBA LABORatory for Art and Urban Development event, organised by the artist and curator Jan Holtmann, was no ordinary conference, but rather, as far as its structure was concerned, an attempt at constructing a contemporary experimental research system. In the following year the issues were presented in the form of a series of interviews entitled “Art and Urban Development”. The theme of “a vegetarian restaurant managed by a horde of cannibals” was addressed and continued in 2009 by a series of events about cultural understanding and its positioning and organisation within the context of art and urban development. It consist of (among other) the role play in respect to the question "What do we mean, when we call it "art"?" as well as a fight club on the issue of "Spaces for Art".

LABOR 2010:

Teaming up with the Kunstverein Hamburg

In 2010 the IBA LABORatory for Art and Urban development was staged in cooperation with the Kunstverein Hamburg and entitled “Sidewalk Deli”. From 12 June to 11 July 2010 this project was the starting and meeting point for a debate about publicity and ways in which it is generated and has an impact. The project consisted of three sections – Art and Climate Change, Urbanity and Art and Football.

The Berlin curator Raimar Stange used the "Post-urban. Art and life in post-urban society" exhibition to showcase artistic attitudes addressing the issue of “art depicting the climate disaster” in a variety of different ways. Participating artists included Matthew Antezzo, Bernd & Hilla Becher, Joseph Beuys, Heide Deigert, Douglas Gordon, Tue Greenfort, Almut Linde, Björn Melhus, Anna Meyer, Olaf Nicolai, Manfred Pernice, Bernhard Prinz, Marcel Prüfert, Markus Shimizu, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Silke Wagner and Christine Würmell.

The “Maknete” Society, which was established in Wilhelmsburg in 2007, contributed "Post-urban. Art and life in post-urban society" to the debate and addressed the issue of what ideas and potential post-urban life has in store. How should critique of everyday life be formulated in a post-urban society? And for what purpose? What role does art or rather forms of art in practice play? What relationships exist between artists themselves and to (post)urban lifestyles? Curated by Corinna Koch and Roger Behrens.

The Hamburg artist and curator Jan Holtmann re-explored points of contact between sport and art using a “Kunst und Sportverein (KuS) Wilhelmsburg” in the making, based on which both social developments and political issues can be anticipated in equal measure. The society hosted a range of events featuring artists, students of urban planning and musicians, e.g. regular aerobics sessions with live music, jog-around -Wilhelmsburg lectures, road-testing new football formats and a live football magazine programme. Participating artists and performers included Roger Behrens, Alain Bieber, Alisson Courtot, DJ Plastikstuhl, Thomas Dransch, Erobique, Max Frisinger, Oliver Görnandt, Lukas Grellmann, Tobias Gronau, Daniel Hauptmann, Julia Hurducas, Anton C. Kunze, Mateusz Lendzinski, LOMU (Local Organized Multitude), Ulrich Lölke, Tabea Michaelis, Jaques Palminger and the Kings of Dub Rock, Stefan Rychlak, Marco Schwensfeger, Jakobus Siebels, Trike, UMSCHICHTEN, Till van Daalen and Hannes Waldschütz.

Literature featuring three separate publications was published as part of the "SideWalk Deli" master project. It is available from the Kunstverein Hamburg.
