Gateway to the World Educational Centre

A “knowledge marketplace” has been established at Krieterstrasse. The construction plans reveal the unusual, open composition of the individual modules of the educational centre. The design by Hamburg-based architectural office bof-Architekten and Breimann & Bruun landscape architects is the winner of a Europe-wide urban development and architecture competition. The in-depth handling of environmental and energy aspects received particular commendation says the chairman of the 18-strong competition jury, Professor of Architecture Manfred Hegger from Kassel. Behind-the-scenes items have also been given innovative treatment – the “Tor zur Welt” building will be built using particularly climate-friendly methods and materials, all meeting passive house standards, and be equipped with numerous solar panels. The chief attraction will be a “glass energy centre” allowing children and adolescents to experience climate protection at close quarters.

In the education field and the lessons taught of the single areas of schools, expanded hall ways around the class rooms — so called "learning ateliers" — offer  space to linger or for exhibitions.

The basic “Tor zur Welt” modules:

Language training

Wilhelmsburg Remedial Language School (Sprachheilschule) will be integrated into the educational centre with a wide range of functions, supporting the on-going development of linguistic and communication skills. The spectrum in this context ranges from expert advice and therapeutic care for pre-school and primary school children through the promotion of multilingualism and individual language development at primary and secondary school level to new forms of work with parents.

Multifunctional centre "Torhaus"

The multifunctional centre - Torhaus - will be the heart of the new educational centre, where the “Tor zur Welt” (Gateway to the World) will open wide to include the entire urban district. A central information point will make it easy to find the adult education, family support, youth assistance and school advisory facilities offered here. The planned Island café is intended to be an informal meeting place to facilitate lively communication between the area and the educational centre. In addition to this, there will also be a cafeteria for some 1400 schoolchildren, teachers, employees and guests. The schools’ art and music rooms and a large meeting hall with a stage will ensure that the multifunctional building is also a place for the residents of the area to meet and interact.

School & Business Centre

The function of the School & Business Centre will be to provide career orientation and preparation for vocational training courses, university and work through realistic methods of working and projects. Within the framework of teaching, schoolchildren will set up their own companies; develop products and services ready for the market and offer these to the public. The cooperation between school and business required to do so will be further developed as a network for the Elbe Island and also be used for work experience placements, information events and activities accompanying teaching. Regular contact between schoolchildren and training companies are planned, as are partnerships with institutions of higher learning.

The new Elbe Island School (Elbinselschule)

The Elbe Island School is a model primary school in the pilot project phase incorporating a progressive education concept and full-time (all day) schooling, and is currently being attended by 481 pupils. The school has a diverse profile. Its distinguishing features include cross-school focuses on individualised lessons; education through drama; and language training as well as special Immersive English and Music and Design learning groups. The school, a model primary school in the 4th year of a pilot project, is part of the “Educational Centre – Tor zur Welt” currently being established.

Environment & Science Centre

The centre will help to increase children’s awareness of environmental issues from the very outset, with primary school and nursery children being given the opportunity to experience topics such as water, energy and air; plants and earth; people and animals hands-on in the new environment centre’s various laboratories as well as to discover nature in the outside area designed with educational aspects in mind. The scientific focus at Kirchdorf/Wilhelmsburg Grammar School (Gymnasium) will be further developed and supplemented by experimental and research lessons at the new Environment & Science Centre.
