Wilhelmsburg Central: the new city quarter at the centre of the Elbe Island. Construction north and south of Neuenfelder Straße is scheduled to be completed in 2013, resulting in 30 hectares of living, work and leisure space set in the park of the International Garden Exhibition (igs). Here there are answers to the question how to overcome the defining contrasts on the Elbe Island – city and harbour, quiet and noise, green areas and traffic axes – and how to improve the quality of living for the population. The exhibition gives a glimpse of what may be the most innovative city quarter in Europe one day. In 2013, Wilhelmsburg will show us how we are going to build and live in the future.

Learn everything about the development of the Wilhelmsburg Central project area at the exhibition. In 2009 IBA Hamburg asked international teams of architects and investors to submit architectural designs on four model projects: Water Houses, Smart Price Houses, Smart Material Houses and Hybrid Houses. Following the motto Building Exhibition within the Building Exhibition, seventeen of these houses are going to be built by 2013. The exhibition invites guests to learn about the topics of Living on the Water, Flexible Buildings, Urban Prefabricate Houses and Intelligent Buildings. 

Together with other buildings like the Wälderhaus [Forest House] – a permanent exhibition about forests and sustainability –, the new public swimming baths or the new building for the Ministry of Urban Development and Environment designed by Berlin architects Sauerbruch Hutton, the building types named above make up the new district of Central Wilhelmsburg. 

Beside the four-by-four-metre city model of Wilhelmsburg Central, there are a number of architectural models. Via Webcam one can see the progress of construction on the neighbouring project area. Information panels provide information about the individual building projects and give an impression of how we will live in the future. 

One special characteristic of the exhibition is its location: the igs centre was the first building project to be completed in Wilhelmsburg Central and is home to the administration office of the International Garden Exhibition 2013 and the exhibition halls of IBA Hamburg and igs 2013. Following a design by NÄGELIARCHITEKTEN in Berlin, an investors association of Otto Wulff Bauunternehmung, wph Wohnbau and Projektentwicklung Hamburg is building the Hybrid House.
